Rally Life of Familia
A Rocky Journey
The Beginning
It all begins in 1982, a World Rally Championship driver Achim Warmhold has formed the Mazda Rally Team Europe. He debuted into the new WRC category of Group A by entered the Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo, using privately build Mazda Familia (BD) GT FWD 1.5L E5 naturally aspirated engine and won its class.
Power Upgrade
In 1984, the team has upgraded the car to with a higher power Mazda Familia (BD) GT FWD 1.5L E5T Turbo engine to race in the Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo and finished 2nd in the Group A8 Class.
New Chassis
In 1986, he continued his WRC journey with the Mazda Familia (BF) GT 4WD with 1.6L B6T Turbo engine racing in the Group A class of the Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo with the best result of 2nd in its class.
End of Group B Era
The WRC Group B championship ended in 1987, due to high rate of serious accidents. Group A championship became the centre stage of WRC. In 1990, Achim Warmhold with his Mazda Rally Team Europe debuted their new homologated Mazda Familia (BG) GT-X 4WD with 1.8L BPT Turbo engine, with improved transmission and suspension system. Driver Tommi Mäkinen with Co-Driver Seppo Harjanne took the best result of 5th overall at the 1000 Lakes Rally of Finland in 1991.
Recognition by Mazda
With all the mighty effort of a privateer rally team, Mazda Rally Team Europe finally got recognized by Mazda Japan. Mazda has homologated the next generation Familia (BG) GT-R 4WD with 1.8L BPD Turbo engine with larger IHI RF6 Turbo, forged con-rods, a revised inlet manifold and sodium-filled exhaust valves. Engine cooling was improved hence the widened bonnet vents and widened front bumper, now home to a larger intercooler. An overhauled Xtrac transmission now boasted shot-peened main gears, with other elements of the chassis enhanced to help them handle the extra power.
Sport-4 Concept
Together with the new rally campaign, Mazda has unveiled the prototype of the Mazda Familia Sport-4 concept, with aggressive body styling and there was also discussion of the potential release of a 2.0L turbo engine.
Group A, evolution
Meanwhile, Mazda has released 300 units of the Familia (BG) GT-Ae, for domestic motorsport use. The model GT-Ae means “Group A, evolution”. These unique models shared the power output of the GT-R, but were 30kg lighter, fitted with close-ratio gearboxes, the wiring for ABS, A/C, power mirrors, power windows, power locks, and the sunroof was removed. Instead of using the GT-R leather interior, the lighter cloth interior of the GT-X selected.
Best Motoring
The performance potential of the GT-X and GT-Ae were compared in one of the issues of Japanese famous video magazine, Best Motoring in 1992. They have compared the two Familia against other rally-bred from, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota. The result proved Mazda GT-Ae was by far one of the best Japanese rally model during that time.
Diluted
As Mazda is ready for the factory debut to the WRC, the world economy clasped. Mazda was immediate into financial strive, and all motorsport programs have to put on halt. The new GT-R styling diluted from the Sport-4 concept and the discussion of the new 2.0L turbo engine can go no further.
Budget Cut
With the cut budget, the hard-fought Mazda Rally Team Europe still able to build five Familia (BG) GT-R Group A cars in 1992. One of which went to driver Bjorn Johansson with co-driver Anders Olsson of Q8 Team Mazda Dealer. They finished fifth on Rally Sweden the following year, and the result may be better if not suffered multiple punctures during the race.
PWRC Champion
The primary capability of the GT-R was further demonstrated by its success in The FIA Production World Rally Championship (PWRC), in which driver Alex Fassina with co-driver Luigi Pirollo of Mazda Rally Team Italia won the championship. The Group A and N GT-R have won many of the local rally races around the world, and they still appear in classic rally races today.
It is unfortunate that the Mazda Familia (BG) GT-R Group A never able to show its real colour after the short appearance in 1992 WRC. If the world did not tumble down with the financial downturn, with the experience that they have, Mazda would be more than likely to change the history of WRC and sport sedan segment of the world.
